Although nuts are chock full of healthy fats and vitamins, at times, some people--mostly women--have been reluctant to add them to their diets, extolling concerns over high calories and fat. But a growing body of scientific research is demonstrating that going a little nuts can go a long way toward a healthy lifestyle.

Specifically, a study published last year in the New England Journal of Medicinesuggested that there was a statistically significant correlation between nut consumption and improved mortality. This benefit even extended to those who ate nuts just a few times a week. The study was derived from a subset of data from the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Results were similar for men and women, and significant reductions in deaths stemming from heart disease and cancer were observed.

Now, we all know that correlation does not equal causation; however, as more data suggests that there are health benefits for nuts, it's probably a pretty safe assumption that eating them won'tharmyou. So dig in and have a handful of nuts. If you're wondering which nuts are best foryourdiet, check out our Go Ahead, Go Nuts infographic!
